IY Fire Appeal launched
21 November 2008

Worknow have launched an appeal for those that suffered catastrophic losses in yesterday's fire in Imizamo Yethu.  Up to 200 shacks and +/- 1000 people have been affected by the fire.

You can witness the chaos of yesterday afternoon at http://www.790tv.co.za/

The following is taken from today's Cape Times

"I don't have a place to go. My money, my pool table, it's all burnt up," Sbongakonke Hlophe said, burying his head in his hands as he lay atop the clothes, mattress, and other possessions he was able to salvage before the flames engulfed his home.  Hlophe was asleep when his brother came to warn him the fire was closing in on their home.

Speaking to a relative, Sbumnyatholi Khanyile cried into his cellphone: "Oh my God . all my stuff is gone, my home, it's all gone."  Khanyile and his brother arrived too late to save anything from the home they shared. Mother and daughter Nobuntu Mawoko and Nobantu Paliso said by the time they arrived, the blaze was "too strong" for them to save anything.  The home of Paliso's brother was also burnt down. Paliso was not sure where the family would spend the night.  "I don't know where we're going. I can't even think about tomorrow."

PLEASE HELP OUT IF YOU CAN.       Any items of clothing, household items, non perishable food items, crockery, blankets, mattresses etc will be most gratefully received. You can drop them off at our new Hout Bay office (above Steers in Victoria Road), or alternatively at the police station at the IY circle.   Cash donations can be deposited into the WorkNow Bank account (details below).

We will make sure that all donations, cash or otherwise, will reach those in need via the appropriate relief agencies working in the area.
